The 85 ways to tie a tie

I am grateful to Thomas Fink for permission to use the how to tie a tie diagrams on this page. Thomas, together with Yong Mao, have used a mathematical model known as a persistent random walk to examine the sequence of moves involved in tieing neck ties. They worked out that there are 85 ways to tie a necktie.  However, only some knots were deemed to be aesthetic on the grounds of "symmetry" and "balance". These included the four common tie knots as well as six new ones.
